Brandenburg Gate to Get 281 New LED Lights, Cutting Energy Use by 40%
Berlin began replacing the Brandenburg Gate's 24-year-old lighting system on 20 October with 281 modern LED units at a cost of around €1.2 million, with the new lights due to switch on by early December.
Construction work to upgrade the Brandenburg Gate's facade lighting started on 20 October 2026. The gate's existing system, installed in 2002, has become increasingly unreliable as spare parts grow scarce. It will be replaced with 281 modern LED lights expected to consume up to 40% less energy than the current setup while maintaining the monument's familiar warm nighttime appearance. The project costs approximately €1.2 million. The central passage through the gate remains open and illuminated throughout the renovation. The new LED system is due to be operational by early December 2026. The Berliner Zeitung reported on the project on 19 October and the construction start on 20 October attracted further reader interest, making it one of the most-clicked Berlin local stories around that date.
