Two-Thirds of Microdramas Released Outside China Are Now AI-Generated
A new report reveals that AI-generated titles made up 67% of vertical drama releases on major platforms outside China in Q3 2026, up sharply from just 3% at the start of the year.
A report published around October 22, 2026 and covered by The Hollywood Reporter found that artificial intelligence now generates two-thirds of all vertical short-drama releases outside China across the top 20 streaming platforms, a dramatic rise from 3% in Q1 to 28% in Q2 and 67% in Q3. In China, where the microdrama format originated, over 95% of titles are already AI-made. The cost collapse has been staggering: a drama that cost over RMB 1 million to produce in 2024 can now be made for RMB 50,000–100,000 using AI tools, and in January 2026 alone Chinese platforms launched more than 14,600 AI-generated short dramas — roughly 470 new titles per day. The global microdrama market is estimated at $8 billion. The surge is devastating traditional employment: auditions and work for cast and crew are evaporating as AI floods the apps. The Wrap noted that these AI-generated microdramas could reshape mobile entertainment entirely, while industry observers warned of profound consequences for writers, actors, and directors in the vertical-drama sector.
