Schönhauser Allee Bridge Works Pushed Back: U2 and Tram M1 Disruptions Through 2032
BVG revised the schedule for the complex Schönhauser Allee bridge reconstruction: preparatory work starts spring 2027, main works in 2028, with completion now not expected until end of 2032. The M1 tram will be fully removed for over five years.
The reconstruction of the Schönhauser Allee railway bridge — described as Berlin's most complicated bridge construction project — has been pushed back again, according to BVG's revised schedule published on 22 October 2026. Preparatory support-structure work will now begin in spring 2027 rather than late 2026, with the main construction phase starting in 2028 and the project not expected to finish before end of 2032. Approximately 20,000 vehicles use Schönhauser Allee daily. The U2 underground line will face two separate two-week service suspensions in 2027 (spring and autumn). The M1 tram line will be completely removed from 21 June 2027 through the entirety of 2032, requiring passengers to walk portions of their journeys. A pedestrian tunnel connecting the S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations will be rebuilt as a separate project. The antifascist resistance memorial installed in 1986 will be incorporated into the new bridge structure. And in a detail that garnered local affection: the famous Ketwurst stand operated by Alain André will remain open throughout the construction.
