Ebola Spreads to Nigeria as Kenya Confirms Ninth Case in Fast-Growing African Outbreak

Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case on October 20 as the Bundibugyo-strain outbreak centred in the DRC — now the fastest-spreading in history at over 9,500 cases — expanded to a fifth African country.

The 2026 Ebola epidemic centred in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now reached five countries, with Nigeria confirming its first Bundibugyo ebolavirus case on October 20: a woman who had travelled from Uganda to Abuja and developed symptoms on October 7. Nigerian authorities identified 44 close contacts for monitoring. Meanwhile, Kenya confirmed its ninth case — a 24-year-old close family member of the outbreak's first victim, a Kenyan man who had been living in Beni, DRC — bringing its cluster to nine cases with one death, all traced back to the same source. As of October 18, the DRC reported 9,552 confirmed cases and 4,602 deaths — a case-fatality rate of 48.2 percent — across eight provinces. The current outbreak is expanding roughly three times faster than the 2014–2016 West African epidemic at the same stage. MSF warned of undetected transmission chains, while Africa CDC called an emergency virtual health-ministers summit. Contact tracing effectiveness in DRC stands at only 76.9 percent, well below the 95 percent target, and vaccination rates among frontline workers remain low. Children under five account for 24 percent of confirmed cases in North Kivu.
