Netflix cuts about 1,000 jobs in its biggest-ever layoff round

Netflix is laying off roughly 1,000 employees, about 6% of its workforce, in its largest job cuts to date, hitting product, technology, legal and HR teams as streaming competition intensifies.

Streaming giant Netflix is cutting roughly 1,000 employees, about 6% of its global workforce, in its largest round of layoffs to date, with the news breaking on Oct. 14 and still dominating business headlines on Oct. 17. Most of the cuts fall on the company's product, technology, legal and human-resources teams. Netflix had about 16,000 full-time staff at the end of 2025. The company said it would 'continue to invest aggressively in high impact areas' and was still on track to meet its full-year financial forecast. Executives framed the move as an internal reorganisation rather than a response to weakness: Netflix reported 2025 revenue of US$45.2 billion, up 16% year-on-year, and net income of US$11 billion, up 26%. Analysts linked the restructuring to intensifying competition for user attention from short-form video and generative AI entertainment, as well as a wider wave of tech cost-cutting that has also hit HubSpot (660 roles, 7% of staff), Workday (525), Kroger (3,000 corporate roles over three years) and Pfizer (150 in Michigan). The round also coincided with the departure of Netflix's top content executive.
