Group Violence by Youths Rising Sharply in Berlin and Brandenburg
Berlin recorded 80,541 violent crimes in the past year — a third more than a decade ago — with police and researchers highlighting a sharp increase in pack attacks by groups of young people in the capital and Brandenburg.
A detailed report published on 21 October 2026 in Berliner Zeitung examined a marked rise in group violence by young people across Berlin and Brandenburg. Official statistics show Berlin registered 80,541 violent crimes — including robbery, assault and coercion — in the most recent year, compared with 60,287 such crimes a decade earlier in 2015, an increase of roughly one third. The article focused particularly on 'ten-against-one' style group attacks, citing multiple incidents in Berlin, Potsdam and Frankfurt an der Oder. Police statistics show non-German suspects feature disproportionately in certain offence categories: 55 per cent of robbery suspects, 44.1 per cent of assault suspects and 39.4 per cent of those suspected of threats or coercion are foreign nationals, while foreign nationals make up 22.5 per cent of Berlin's population — up 0.6 percentage points. The report noted that the figures require careful contextual analysis, as changes in crime rates and population composition do not map simply onto each other. Security researchers and youth workers called for more prevention resources and social investment in affected neighbourhoods.
