Man killed by falling tree in East New York as Parks faces hundreds of storm-damage calls
A 56-year-old man died after a tree fell on him on Euclid Avenue in East New York during the nor'easter. The city's Parks Department is handling hundreds of reports of downed or damaged trees.
A 56-year-old man was killed by a falling tree in East New York, Brooklyn, on Saturday afternoon. The NYPD said officers went to 700 Euclid Ave. shortly before 3:30 p.m. and found him in critical condition. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he died. Police said they could not confirm whether the nor'easter's winds brought the tree down, but officials had been urging residents to stay home as gusts topped 55 mph. Gothamist's updated storm coverage said Mayor Zohran Mamdani identified the man as Leighton Brown, a NYCHA employee, and said the city was mourning one of its own. City officials said the Parks Department had received hundreds of requests for help with downed or damaged trees since Friday, mostly in Queens and Brooklyn. The department said on X that it expected to be cleaning up after the storm for days. It asked people to report emergencies and downed power lines to 911, and fallen or damaged trees to 311 or through the city's damaged-tree map.
