17-Year-Old Charged with Murder in Fatal Midtown Subway Platform Shooting
A 17-year-old turned himself in to police Thursday and was charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Bronx man Darrel Rodriguez on a Midtown Manhattan subway platform over the weekend.
A 17-year-old was arrested Thursday and charged with murder, criminal possession of a loaded firearm, and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the fatal shooting of Darrel Rodriguez, 26, of the Bronx, at a Midtown Manhattan subway station. The teenager turned himself in around noon after the NYPD reached his mother by phone, and a Manhattan judge ordered him held without bail. Police did not release his name, but his attorney, Michael Horn, identified him and said the allegations "came as a shock," describing his client as a high school student, lifeguard, and camp counselor with no criminal record.
Rodriguez was shot once in the chest around noon Saturday on the northbound E train platform at the 53rd Street–Seventh Avenue station, which serves the B, D, and E lines. Authorities say the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two men that began on the platform and spilled onto a train. Rodriguez was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The NYPD had released images Sunday of a person of interest seen fleeing north on Seventh Avenue in a red tracksuit, black vest, and black face mask and carrying a backpack, though police did not confirm whether the arrested teen was the individual shown.
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber praised the police for making the arrest. Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the killing "an incredibly painful reminder" of the work still needed to address gun violence. The city's transit system has recorded seven murders through October 18 this year, compared with four over the same period in 2025, according to NYPD Transit Bureau data.
