Barclays to Cut 5,000 Jobs in AI-Driven Restructuring

Britain's Barclays announced it will eliminate roughly 5,000 positions — about 5% of its global workforce — as the bank scales up artificial intelligence to replace human roles in software development and support functions.

Barclays confirmed on October 22–23, 2026 that it plans to cut approximately 5,000 jobs across its global operations, representing around 5% of its total workforce, as part of an AI-driven restructuring programme. About 60% of the affected roles are in support and technology functions, including software development, as the British bank accelerates automation. The announcement came alongside a solid set of third-quarter results: pretax profits of £2.3 billion, up 12% year-on-year. Barclays had already eliminated around 1,000 roles in the first half of 2026. The bank spent £307 million — approximately $412 million — on restructuring in the first nine months of the year and expects to spend a further £300 million by year-end, bringing total restructuring costs for 2026 to roughly £607 million. Chief Executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan framed AI as an enabler rather than the sole driver of change, telling investors: 'We will employ the AI at scale but AI is the icing on the cake not the cake.' The announcement placed Barclays among a growing list of major European and US financial institutions using AI cost-efficiency arguments to justify large-scale workforce reductions in 2026.
