Brooklyn Woman Killed by Garbage Truck While Crossing Bay Parkway

Siobhan Lynch, 30, was struck and killed by a Department of Sanitation garbage truck as she crossed Bay Parkway in Brooklyn on Wednesday evening, just days before daylight saving time ends and sunset grows even earlier.

Siobhan Lynch, 30, of Brooklyn, was struck and killed by a New York City Department of Sanitation garbage truck on Wednesday evening while crossing Bay Parkway at Cropsey Avenue in Brooklyn. The truck was heading east when it turned right onto the parkway and hit Lynch around 6:35 p.m., roughly 40 minutes after sunset. Emergency services transported her to NYU Langone Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The truck's 41-year-old driver remained at the scene and has not been arrested. The NYPD's Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is investigating, and the Department of Sanitation said it is assisting with the inquiry.

The crash occurred just days before daylight saving time ends, after which the sun will set an hour earlier. The timing coincided with the Mamdani administration's launch of the Dusk and Darkness campaign on Thursday — a combination of education and traffic enforcement aimed at protecting pedestrians and cyclists during fall and winter evenings. Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn said traffic deaths through September were at their second-lowest level since the city began tracking them more than a century ago, and pedestrian deaths were at a record low. He urged all New Yorkers to slow down, watch for pedestrians and cyclists, and exercise extra caution when turning at intersections. As part of the campaign, the NYPD plans to focus enforcement on speeding, failure to yield, and distracted driving during the evening commute.
