The 50th Mostra Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo runs from October 15 to 29, marking a landmark anniversary with 380 films from 93 countries alongside exhibitions, book launches, and special events across the city.
The 50th Mostra Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo is running from October 15 to 29, bringing 380 films from 93 countries to cinema halls and cultural venues across the Brazilian capital. The anniversary edition honours American director James Gray, who designed the festival's official poster and will receive the León Cakoff Prize along with a retrospective of his work. Gray is also scheduled to take part in a public conversation with director Walter Salles on October 15 at Sala Petrobras, located at Solar Fábio Prado on Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima.
Highlights in the programme include Fjord, winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes; Amor Possível, recipient of the Silver Lion at Venice; Mulher Desconhecida, the Golden Lion winner at Venice; and Tigre de Papel by James Gray. Brazilian film Feito Pipa, directed by Allan Deberton, has been selected as the country's submission for the Oscar race. A restored print of F.W. Murnau's classic Aurora will be screened with a live score performed by the Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica at the Teatro Cultura Artística.
Children's programming is presented through the Mostrinha, featuring 20 feature films and one short film, 16 of which are Brazilian premieres. Two exhibitions mark the anniversary: a festival history display at Solar Fábio Prado open until October 29, and a collection of 60 black-and-white photographs by Abbas Kiarostami at the Museu da Imagem e do Som from October 20 to November 8. Two books are also being launched, and a new archive website with an interactive map documents the festival's history of more than 11,000 films screened over five decades.
