IMF-World Bank Bangkok Meetings Close Warning of Fraying Resilience as Global Debt Nears 100% of GDP

The IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok concluded on October 18 after the Fund raised its 2026 global growth forecast to 3.1% but warned that inflation is rising to 4.7%, public debt is approaching 100% of world GDP, and economic growth has become dangerously concentrated.

The 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group wrapped up on Sunday October 18 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok, Thailand — the first Bangkok gathering since 1991 — drawing 18,000 registered participants from 191 countries. In its World Economic Outlook, titled 'Resilience under Strain, Urgent Choices,' the IMF raised its 2026 global growth forecast slightly to 3.1%, up from its July estimate of 3.0% but still below the 3.5% expansion recorded in 2025. The Fund warned that global headline inflation is expected to climb to 4.7% in 2026 before easing to 4.1% in 2027, driven largely by higher energy and food prices linked to the ongoing Iran conflict. More starkly, global public debt is approaching 100% of GDP — levels last seen immediately after World War II — while economic growth has grown dangerously concentrated: just 32 economies now generate 95% of the world's growth, down from 54 as recently as April. The meetings also yielded the Bangkok Blueprint, a joint IMF–World Bank–Bank of Thailand policy framework to combat cyber-enabled financial fraud, setting out 12 considerations for national authorities. The IMF's Global Financial Stability Report separately warned of the risk of a disorderly spike in sovereign bond yields driven by mounting debt, resurgent inflation, and competition for capital from AI-linked bond issuance. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva identified AI expansion, persistently high energy prices, and record public debt as the three defining challenges for the world economy.
