UNESCO marks third International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage

Communities, cultural institutions and governments worldwide staged events on October 17, 2026 for the third UNESCO International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

October 17, 2026 was celebrated worldwide as the International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage, a date proclaimed at the 42nd session of UNESCO's General Conference in November 2023 and now in its third edition. States Parties, cultural institutions, communities and NGOs organised activities showcasing living heritage: oral traditions, performing arts, rituals, festive events, knowledge of nature and traditional craftsmanship. UNESCO urged events highlighting the diversity of practices currently inscribed on its lists for safeguarding. A flagship initiative drew particular attention: in India, the accessibility NGO Svayam, partnering with the United Nations in India and UNESCO for a second year, extended its Accessible Durga Puja programme across pandals in the Delhi NCR, applying principles of UNESCO's 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage by welcoming persons with disabilities into festival spaces. Opinion commentary — including a widely shared piece in The National (UAE) by NYUAD's arts-and-culture leadership — argued that heritage is 'not fixed in the past but reinvented in real time'. Romanian and other national outlets flagged which of their inscribed traditions are protected under UNESCO's lists, giving the day broad international pick-up.
