Anthropic's IPO Filing Warns AI May Soon Be Able to Build Itself

Anthropic disclosed in an updated IPO filing that its future models may "imminently" cross the threshold for recursive self-improvement — the point at which AI accelerates its own development faster than humans can evaluate it.

In an amended S-1/A filing released Monday, Anthropic warned investors that it may be approaching a milestone it calls the recursive self-improvement (RSI) threshold. RSI refers to the point at which AI becomes so capable of training itself that it triggers a dramatic, rapid acceleration in AI capabilities — a development that AI safety researchers view as a critical and potentially uncontrollable inflection point. Under its Responsible Scaling Policy, Anthropic defines this threshold as "dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI."

The company stated that none of its current models has yet crossed this line, but added that internal projections about near-future models suggest the threshold "may imminently" be met. In a striking admission, Anthropic acknowledged it has previously failed to recognise significant leaps in its own models' capabilities until after the fact, and said the same could happen again.

Alongside the RSI disclosure, the filing noted that while revenue is soaring, so are expenses. Anthropic also pledged to keep humans meaningfully involved in frontier model development for the foreseeable future, and said it is considering updates to its Responsible Scaling Policy to maintain human oversight.

Skeptics may note that an S-1 serves both disclosure and marketing purposes, and that claims of approaching such a powerful milestone could be read as both a caution and a selling point. Even so, the company's rapid capability gains in coding, mathematics, and cybersecurity over the past year lend the warning genuine weight.
