Berlin Police See No School-Blockade Surge But Prepare for Halloween Protest Day
Berlin police said on 24 October that they have found no unusual increase in calls to blockade schools, but are watching student protest developments in France and Italy and gearing up for a nationwide Gen Z demonstration on 31 October.
Berlin police issued a statement on 24 October 2026 clarifying that they have found no evidence of heightened mobilisation for school blockades or protests. They are, however, closely monitoring developments related to student protests in France and Italy and assessing any possible impact on demonstrations in the capital.
Authorities are preparing for a large deployment on 31 October, the date chosen by the initiative "Gen Z steht auf" for a protest day across several German cities. Police noted that Halloween night, which regularly requires police intervention, falls on the same date. The police union GdP has separately warned that student protests in Berlin risk being instrumentalised by "radical or even extremist forces."
The context follows an incident on 16 October, when police identified a group of around 50 people with no connection to the school at a demonstration outside a Friedrichshain gymnasium. While the student protest passed off peacefully, officers clashed with the outside group and a local resident was injured. That operation was carried out in close coordination with school management and a crisis team established by the Senate Education Administration. Lessons from the incident are feeding into ongoing threat assessments and future planning.
Berlin police are also running information sessions for pupils to explain their right to demonstrate, how to prepare a lawful protest, how to resolve conflicts, and the risks of carrying even seemingly harmless objects.
