Brazil Presidential Runoff Days Away as Bolsonaro Holds Narrow Lead Over Lula

With Brazil's presidential runoff set for 25 October, right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro holds a slender polling lead over incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in a race that has become a proxy battle between Latin America's left and Trump-aligned right.

Brazil enters the final 48 hours before its presidential runoff on 25 October 2026 with polls showing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, maintaining a slim advantage over incumbent leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In the first round on 4 October, Bolsonaro defied pre-election surveys by finishing first with 47 percent of the vote to Lula's 45 percent, a two-point margin that upended predictions of a comfortable Lula lead. The result forced a runoff and set up an extremely tight contest. Bolsonaro, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, has campaigned on security, economic nationalism and opposition to what he calls globalist institutions. Lula, seeking to retain the presidency, has shifted his campaign strategy for the second round, investing heavily in social media outreach and organising grassroots WhatsApp networks — reportedly including a group called Lula's Army with more than seven million subscribers, coordinated in part by members of Congress. Most third-, fourth- and fifth-place first-round candidates were right-wing, giving Bolsonaro a structural pool of voters to absorb. On 23 October, Brazilian electoral law required the end of paid electoral propaganda on television, radio and the internet. Polling shows a near tie, making the runoff genuinely unpredictable. The outcome will shape the direction of Latin America's largest economy and its foreign policy alignment.
