Paris Riots Prompt French Curfews; Trump Says 'Europe Is Finished' Without Tighter Borders

Violent riots that erupted across France over the weekend triggered curfews in Bordeaux, Lille, and other cities, with nearly 120 people arrested. US President Trump intervened publicly, urging President Macron to close France's borders and warning that Europe faces collapse without mass deportations.

France was rattled by an 'unprecedented' level of violent unrest on the weekend of October 17–18, 2026, as thousands of rioters targeted commercial districts in Bordeaux, smashing storefronts and ransacking shops. Authorities deployed 400 police officers and gendarmes with water cannons and armoured vehicles; nearly 120 people were arrested over Saturday and Sunday. In response, French authorities imposed curfews on minors in Bordeaux, effective from Tuesday through October 26, and overnight curfews in Lille and several other northern cities from Monday. The US Embassy issued a security alert urging Americans in France to avoid demonstrations. US President Donald Trump waded into the crisis, telling reporters he had urged President Emmanuel Macron personally to 'close up your borders,' attributing the unrest entirely to immigration. Trump posted that France had been 'taken over by migrants' and warned that 'Europe is finished' unless governments implement tighter border controls and large-scale deportations. The French government pushed back on Trump's characterisation, insisting domestic social and economic factors were also driving the unrest.
