London Museum will open its new permanent home in the historic Smithfield market buildings on 28 November 2026, with free entry to galleries telling the story of the capital from the Roman era to the present day.
London Museum — formerly known as Museum of London — will open the doors to its new Smithfield home on 28 November 2026, offering free permanent galleries that chart the story of London from the Roman era through to the 2012 Olympics and the digital age.
After 45 years at its London Wall site, the museum is relocating to West Smithfield, where it will occupy two landmark buildings: the Victorian General Market and the neighbouring 1960s Poultry Market. The project took a decade to develop and involved 100,000 people from London and beyond.
The Victorian General Market's historic trading floor has been transformed into a civic space at ground level, retaining the feel of the original marketplace and hosting exhibitions and events curated in partnership with Londoners. Underground galleries and a day-to-night programme will bring the space further to life, while a "museum high street" around the outside of the building will feature independent shops, cafés, social enterprises and cultural partners.
The new location benefits from strong transport links, with Farringdon station a short walk away, served by the Elizabeth line, the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Underground lines, and Thameslink trains.
In the meantime, London Museum Docklands remains open with free general admission, though charges may apply for special exhibitions.
