Russia's Futuristic Antarctic Research Station Goes Viral, Compared to Star Wars and Metal Gear Solid
Footage of Russia's revamped Vostok Station in Antarctica—a blue-and-red five-module complex raised on 36 steel legs above the ice—racked up over a million views on X within two days and spread to Instagram and Facebook, with users comparing it to a sci-fi film set.
Footage posted on X (formerly Twitter) around Saturday 25 October showing Russia's modernised Vostok Station in Antarctica went viral, accumulating more than one million views in just two days before spreading widely across Instagram and Facebook by 29 October 2026. The video shows the station's exterior painted in blue and the colours of the Russian flag, almost entirely surrounded by snow and frost. The five-module complex stretches 140 metres in length and rises up to 17.5 metres on 36 three-metre-high supports designed to keep it above the accumulating snow. Founded in 1957 during the Soviet era, Vostok Station received its futuristic makeover in 2024 when the modernised elevated modules replaced an ageing complex that had been largely buried under snow over the decades. Online commenters described the station as 'otherworldly,' praised its 'Dune vibe,' and said it looked 'straight out of the Star Wars movies,' while others compared it to fortresses from the 'Metal Gear Solid' video game series. Located some 3,500 metres above sea level and 1,400 kilometres from the coast at the Earth's magnetic south Pole of Cold, the station can house up to 35 scientists in summer and 15 in winter, offering private rooms, laboratories, a gym, a sauna, and an operating theatre.
