Steam Next Fest Opens with a Record 8,000-Plus Game Demos

Steam Next Fest 2026's October edition kicked off on October 19, offering gamers more than 8,000 free playable demos — roughly double the June event — in the platform's largest-ever discovery week.

Steam's October 2026 edition of Next Fest, Valve's bi-annual game-discovery event, opened on October 19 and runs until October 26, and it has broken records: the festival's press preview page listed 8,011 demos, roughly twice the count seen at the June 2026 edition and vastly more than the approximately 1,000 on offer at the June 2022 event. The explosive growth is partly attributed to the proliferation of AI-assisted "vibe coding" — rapid game prototyping using tools like Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 — which has dramatically lowered the barrier to releasing a playable demo on Steam. Industry observers have welcomed the event's scale as a discovery engine for players but noted that the majority of entries may be derivative or low-effort, with some developers reporting that their original concepts were cloned within hours of going live. Despite these concerns, genuine highlights among the week's demos include historical-horror title 1666: Amsterdam, a folk-horror narrative adventure called Last Round at the End of the World, and a cosmic-horror game from the creators of Umurangi Generation. The event arrives with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launching on October 23 mid-fest, ensuring the week is one of the busiest gaming news cycles of the year.
