A fire erupted on the eighth floor of East River Houses, a New York City Housing Authority high-rise at East 105th Street in East Harlem, at approximately 2:45 a.m. on Monday October 19, 2026. Three residents sustained injuries — a woman, a man and a child — all of whom suffered non-life-threatening wounds and are expected to recover. Firefighters responded and worked to bring the blaze under control. The cause of the fire was not publicly disclosed. East River Houses is a NYCHA public housing complex, and the early-morning blaze added to ongoing scrutiny of building safety conditions at city-run housing across the five boroughs. The fire displaced residents on the affected floor while the FDNY worked at the scene in the pre-dawn hours.
