Household surveys in three Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf protected neighbourhoods

Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf is surveying households in three areas protected under Berlin's social-preservation rules, which aim to keep existing residents from being pushed out. The survey will check whether the protection is still justified.

In a press release dated 28 September 2026, the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office announced household surveys in three 'soziale Erhaltungsgebiete': areas where special rules protect existing residents from being displaced. The areas are Gierkeplatz, Richard-Wagner-Straße and Karl-August-Platz. The district is checking whether the legal conditions for keeping the three areas protected are still met. In practice, social preservation status lets a district restrict luxury renovations and conversion of rental flats so that long-standing residents aren't pushed out. The surveys collect data on residents and housing to support that decision. The excerpt available to me didn't include the survey period, how households will be contacted or who is carrying out the survey. Note on the date: this release was published on 28 September 2026, not on the requested 29 September 2026. It is included as a fallback because no berlin.de press release dated 29 September could be found during research.
