Matty Cash Strike Gives Aston Villa 1-0 Win Over Manchester City
Matty Cash's curling 19th-minute strike gave Aston Villa a 1-0 victory over Manchester City at Villa Park, dealing an early blow to City's Premier League title hopes and leaving them six points behind leaders Arsenal.
Aston Villa produced a disciplined, tactically sharp performance to defeat Manchester City 1-0 at Villa Park, handing Pep Guardiola's side an early setback in the Premier League title race. Matty Cash provided the decisive moment in the 19th minute, collecting the ball at the edge of the area after a short corner was played to Emiliano Buendía, who crossed it back out to him. Cash unleashed a low shot that curled into the bottom corner to give Villa the lead they never surrendered. The result was Villa's fourth consecutive league victory and a third successive home win over Guardiola's side — a run that would have seemed unlikely before Unai Emery arrived at Villa Park in October 2022, marking his third anniversary in charge. Erling Haaland, who had scored in each of his previous 12 appearances across all competitions this season, was kept off the scoresheet. City thought they had levelled in the 89th minute when Haaland slid in at the far post, but the goal was ruled out because Phil Foden was offside in the build-up. Jadon Sancho, introduced early as a substitute for the injured Buendía, had two chances from a narrow angle in the 69th minute but both were saved. City now trail leaders Arsenal by six points.
