In a new interview with WIRED's Steven Levy, Apple CEO John Ternus described his deep passion for product as the defining focus of his leadership, and explained that Apple will use AI specifically to build products that improve people's lives.
Following the unveil of the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR, Apple CEO John Ternus sat down with WIRED's Steven Levy for a wide-ranging conversation that put one theme front and centre: product.
Asked about taking on a massively expanded portfolio, Ternus was direct. "I do love product. I'm super passionate about it," he said, describing the role as giving him the privilege of continuously learning and going deeper into new areas.
That focus shapes his view of artificial intelligence too. Rather than treating AI as an end in itself, Ternus frames it as a means to better products: "I would hope people recognize that the work we do is building incredible products that make their lives better. We're absolutely going to leverage AI to do that." On the prospect of AI agents handling more tasks autonomously, he argued that "the creation of products is a deeply human and personal thing, something that we love to do." On AI regulation, his answer stayed product-centred: Apple's priority is "making sure that our products are secure and safe, and protecting the users' information."
Senior Apple executives reinforced the message. Chip chief Johny Srouji said, "John is going to be a great CEO. He's a product guy at heart," while marketing head Greg Joswiak added that Ternus "innately has a great sense for great products, and that's what Apple is."
Taken together with Apple's recent wave of product launches, the interview paints a clear picture of a CEO whose instincts and ambitions are rooted firmly in what the company ships.
