Dubai Outpaces Middle East Rivals as Winter Sun Tourism Season Surges

Dubai recorded 6.97 million international visitors in the first eight months of 2026, outpacing regional rivals Oman and Egypt in per-visitor spending, boosted by a new five-year self-sponsored tourist visa.

Dubai has emerged as the standout performer in the Middle East's post-summer tourism market, decisively outpacing regional competitors Oman and Egypt in both arrival volumes and per-capita visitor spending. The emirate welcomed approximately 869,000 international overnight visitors in August 2026 alone — the highest monthly figure since February — bringing the year-to-date total to 6.97 million through August. Average hotel occupancy surged to 66% in summer months, a remarkable achievement for a traditionally quiet season, up sharply from 36% in March. Dubai's hotel inventory has grown to nearly 149,000 rooms collectively recording 21.61 million occupied room nights across the first eight months of the year. A new self-sponsored five-year multiple-entry tourist visa, introduced in July 2026 and allowing 90-day stays without a local sponsor, is credited with boosting repeat visitation. Key source markets include Western Europe (20%), South Asia (17%), GCC nations (16%), and CIS/Eastern Europe (14%). While Oman recorded 1.8 million tourists in the first half of 2026, it trails Dubai significantly in per-capita expenditure, underscoring the UAE hub's dominant position as the Gulf's premier leisure and business destination heading into the lucrative winter season.
