Carrick Fights to Keep His Job at Manchester United After Champions League Humiliation
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick holds a crisis press conference on October 23 ahead of a make-or-break Premier League clash with Bournemouth, days after a 4-1 Champions League thrashing by Como and captain Bruno Fernandes' public criticism of the coaching staff.
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick confirmed at a Friday press conference that he will remain in charge for Sunday's Premier League trip to Bournemouth — but only barely. The club slumped to a catastrophic 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como on October 21, extending their winless run to seven matches. United have managed just one Premier League win all season and sit 13th in the table. The situation deteriorated further when captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the coaching staff's tactical approach after being substituted, saying the team should be more brave on the pressure and avoid passive defensive structures. The club is now reviewing potential disciplinary action against Fernandes. Defender Lisandro Martínez had previously criticised the director of football, compounding internal tensions. Carrick admitted the Como performance was not acceptable. Former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann has been identified as the club's primary candidate to succeed Carrick, with Eddie Howe and Fabian Hürzeler also in contention. Club sources called the press conference attendance business as usual, but made clear that anything less than a convincing result against Bournemouth could seal Carrick's exit before the international break.
