Safety Cordon Widened Around Steglitz Bierpinsel Tower as Falling Facade Threatens Traffic

After a preliminary expert report found further facade panels at risk, Steglitz-Zehlendorf district has widened the exclusion zone to twelve metres around the landmark Bierpinsel tower, closing part of Schloßstraße and the Joachim-Tiburtius Bridge in both directions.

The Bierpinsel — a distinctive 1976 gastronomy tower above the Schloßstraße U-Bahn station in Berlin-Steglitz — is posing a growing public hazard. Facade parts fell from approximately 30 metres onto Schloßstraße in September 2026, and an expert commissioned by the building owner to inspect the exterior has now found further panels at risk of falling. In response, the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district authority has widened the safety exclusion zone to a radius of twelve metres around the structure. The measures close the pavement on the tower side, the adjacent cycle lane, and one carriageway of Schloßstraße between Schildhornstraße and Ahornstraße. The Joachim-Tiburtius Bridge has been completely closed in both directions, causing extensive detours for road traffic and public transport. The building owner has been formally ordered to begin immediate safety works. The district construction official has stated publicly that further delays will not be tolerated and that the district will carry out the works itself and bill the owner if necessary. No date has yet been given for when the closures might be lifted.
