Berlin Autumn School Holidays Begin: BER Expects 1.4 Million Passengers, A100 Britz Tunnel Closes Nightly
Berlin's two-week autumn school holidays started October 19, bringing BER Airport its busiest fortnight of the season and nighttime closures of the A100 Britz tunnel for maintenance between October 19 and 23.
Published October 16, 2026, Tagesspiegel warned that Berlin's two-week autumn school holidays — starting October 19 — would bring significant disruption across all transport modes. Berlin Airport BER expected approximately 280,000 passengers during the first weekend alone, with around 1.4 million throughout the holiday period; popular destinations included Antalya and Mallorca. Rail travellers to the Baltic coast faced engineering work between Waren and Neustrelitz through December 12, with bus replacement services. On the roads, the Berlin traffic information centre warned of heavy congestion on routes to coastal and mountain regions. Particularly relevant for Berliner motorists: the A100 Britz tunnel — between the Buschkrugallee and Oberlandstraße junctions in southern Berlin — would be fully closed nightly from 9 PM to 5 AM from October 19 to 23 for maintenance work including tunnel cleaning, drainage checks, lighting repairs, and safety inspections. Additional closures were scheduled on the A111 during the second week of the holidays.
