Teen Arrested in Fatal Midtown Subway Platform Shooting
A 17-year-old suspect turned himself in Thursday and was charged with murder in the killing of Darryl Rodriguez, 26, on an E-train platform at the 7th Avenue–53rd Street station after a dispute over marijuana smoking.
New York City police announced the arrest of Xavian Collins, 17, on Thursday, October 23, after he turned himself in around noon — roughly five days after fatally shooting Darryl Rodriguez, 26, on a Midtown Manhattan subway platform. The shooting occurred on the northbound E-train platform at the Seventh Avenue–53rd Street station and arose from a dispute over marijuana smoking that began on the train, spilled back onto the platform, and ended in a single gunshot to Rodriguez's chest. Collins faces charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Rodriguez's death marked the seventh homicide on the New York City subway system in 2026, compared with four at the same point in 2025. Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the killing as heartbreaking and outrageous. The arrest sparked renewed debate about subway safety, with some transit advocates calling for a ban on face coverings in the system to help identify suspects on surveillance footage.
