Free Sunday: Four Berlin Museums Open Their Doors at No Charge

Four Berlin museums — Brücke-Museum, Georg Kolbe Museum, Haus am Waldsee, and Kunsthaus Dahlem — offered free entry on Sunday, reviving memories of the city's discontinued monthly museum Sundays.

On Sunday, the Brücke-Museum, Georg Kolbe Museum, Haus am Waldsee, and Kunsthaus Dahlem all welcomed visitors free of charge, in a joint initiative deliberately echoing Berlin's former "Museumssonntag" programme, under which free admission was once offered once a month. The action was made possible through a generous donation, the museums said. The timing was deliberate: coalition negotiations to form a new Berlin Senate are currently under way, bringing with them decisions on the city's budget and cultural priorities. Restoring free museum Sundays had been included across party lines in several election manifestos. Each venue paired free entry with its own programme: the Georg Kolbe Museum opened its new "everybody" exhibition without charge; Kunsthaus Dahlem hosted a reading by author Anna Shapiro from her book, alongside a portrait-making workshop; Haus am Waldsee offered a guided tour of its exhibition and a drop-in workshop on the theme "One House – Many Pictures"; and the Brücke-Museum held a guided walk-through exploring the role of landscapes in the Brücke artists' work, spanning its "Draußen … im Museum" and "Draußen unter Kiefern" exhibitions. The four institutions said the initiative was intended as a statement in favour of open, low-barrier access to art and culture.
