Iran Says Four Tankers Struck Mines in the Strait of Hormuz

Iran's Revolutionary Guards reported that four oil tankers caught fire after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz, directly contradicting a US Central Command claim that the waterway had been cleared. Oil prices rose sharply as shipping fears intensified with US midterm elections days away.

On 30 October 2026, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that four oil tankers struck mines and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz, with three burning along what Iran called an "unauthorised southern route" near the Omani coast and a fourth igniting east of the strait. The IRGC directly challenged a US Central Command statement that American naval forces had swept the primary transit lanes clear of mines, with IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebi demanding independent verification. A British maritime authority, UKMTO, separately confirmed a burning vessel near Oman. The incidents pushed oil prices higher as traders priced in growing supply risk from the eight-month-old US-Israeli conflict with Iran. The timing was seen as significant: with US midterm elections scheduled for 3 November, analysts noted that any further military escalation by Washington or Tel Aviv was likely to wait until after polling. Qatar meanwhile continued mediating a proposal to restore international nuclear inspections of Iran's facilities in exchange for limited US sanctions relief, but Tehran had yet to respond.
