Alphabet Shares Tumble 8.5% After First Earnings Miss in Four Years

Google's parent company posted Q3 2026 results that fell short on both earnings per share and revenue, sending its stock sharply lower despite a record-breaking Google Cloud quarter.

Alphabet reported third-quarter 2026 earnings of $2.12 per share on October 28–29, missing the Wall Street consensus of $3.01 by $0.90. Revenue came in at $127.58 billion, just below the $127.97 billion estimate — the company's first simultaneous top-and-bottom-line miss in nearly four years. Shares fell roughly 8.5% in extended and pre-market trading on October 29. A major drag was negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion, far deeper than the $2.70 billion shortfall analysts expected, reflecting enormous capital expenditure on AI infrastructure. The disappointment stood in contrast to a standout Google Cloud quarter, which posted revenues of $30.7 billion — a 103% year-on-year increase and a new record driven by enterprise AI demand. Consolidated revenue still grew 25%, marking Alphabet's 13th consecutive quarter of double-digit growth. The results reignited investor debate about whether Big Tech's AI spending binge will translate into profits quickly enough, a concern that dragged wider technology shares across US and Asian markets. Samsung Electronics also fell more than 3% on profit that missed estimates, pulling South Korea's Kospi down 1.8%, while Citigroup forecast total Big Tech AI investment exceeding $2.8 trillion by 2029.
