AMC Chief Urges NYU Langone to Find a Way to Save Kips Bay Movie Theater
AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron publicly appealed on October 25 to NYU Langone Health to find a creative solution preserving the 15-screen Kips Bay cinema, which faces a January closure after the hospital's planned campus expansion displaced its lease.
AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron went public on October 25, 2026, with a direct appeal to NYU Langone Health to find a way to keep the AMC Kips Bay 15 cinema at 570 Second Avenue in Manhattan operating. NYU Langone, which is planning a major expansion of its medical campus, is acquiring the building that houses the theater; the current landlord has already terminated AMC's lease, giving the cinema a closure deadline of January 3, 2027. Aron declared that AMC 'does not want to go. Not one little bit,' and proposed alternatives including reducing the theater's footprint within any new development or expanding the building around it. The cinema has operated at the Kips Bay location for more than 25 years. Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal and State Assembly Member Keith Powers both publicly called for a deal that preserves a movie theater, a supermarket, and housing at the site. NYU Langone had not publicly responded to Aron's appeal at time of publication.
