Berlin's Clock Change This Sunday: The Earliest Possible Date Since 2020

Clocks in Berlin turn back from 3 a.m. to 2 a.m. in the night of 25–26 October 2026 — a Sunday — marking the return of winter time. The Berliner Zeitung noted this is the earliest date the changeover can fall, last occurring in 2020.

The biannual clock change arrives unusually early in 2026: EU rules stipulate that summer time ends on the last Sunday in October, which falls between the 25th and the 31st. In 2026 it falls on 25 October — the earliest it can possibly land — an occurrence that last happened in 2020 and will not recur until 2037. Clocks move back from 3:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. in the night of Saturday–Sunday, 25–26 October. As a result, 2026's summer period lasts only 210 days, compared with 217 in 2027. Sunset in Berlin will drop to approximately 4:50 p.m. immediately after the change. Smart devices adjust automatically; car clocks and kitchen appliances do not. The Berliner Zeitung also ran a companion historical feature (published 22 October) tracing how Berlin nearly ended up with two different times: in 1979 East Germany announced it would adopt summer time from April 1980, forcing West Germany to follow suit or face an absurd one-hour time-border at the Wall. The EU Parliament voted to abolish the biannual change in 2019, but member states have not agreed on a common final time, and a study on the consequences is expected by end of 2026. A March 2026 survey found 73% of Germans want to end the practice.
