Vietnam's Phu Quoc Island Drives 40% Economic Growth as Visitor Surge Tops Full-Year Target
Phu Quoc welcomed 8.57 million visitors in the first nine months of 2026, up 30.5%, with tourism revenue surpassing the island's full-year target ahead of schedule.
Vietnam's largest island, Phu Quoc, has recorded a spectacular tourism boom in 2026. In the first nine months of the year, the island welcomed more than 8.57 million visitors — a 30.5% year-on-year increase — while international arrivals surged by 60.2% to exceed 1.92 million. Tourism revenue reached approximately 45.976 trillion VND (roughly 1.78 billion USD), up 47.7%, and crucially exceeded the island's entire full-year target with three months still remaining. The boom powered Phu Quoc's gross regional domestic product up by 39.41% in the same period, accounting for around 70% of total production value on the island. Phu Quoc now contributes nearly 80% of the total tourism revenue for An Giang province. The island's government attributed growth to expanded infrastructure, post-sunset entertainment options, and a strategic push towards higher-value visitors, with revenue growing faster than arrivals — a sign of improving spend per head. National plans under Resolution 26 designate Phu Quoc as a future growth hub alongside Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang.
