Bayern Munich Coach Kompany Hospitalised After Training Collapse

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital after collapsing at the club's training ground on Friday, with the 40-year-old undergoing thorough examinations and remaining under medical care.

Vincent Kompany, the 40-year-old head coach of Bayern Munich, was hospitalised after collapsing while watching a session for the club's reserve team on Friday. Kompany had been dealing with a viral infection affecting his legs for about a week, though he had remained on the sideline for Bayern's Champions League match against Arsenal on Wednesday. Club officials also noted he had needed assistance to climb stairs in the days leading up to the incident, and was reported to be suffering from both the virus and a hip injury. Bayern's director of sport Max Eberl confirmed the hospitalisation, stating that Kompany is "undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care." Eberl added that Kompany's health was the club's top priority and that he would be given "all the time he needs." The coaching staff, led by assistant Aaron Danks who had already stepped in for training and media duties on Tuesday ahead of the Arsenal game, will oversee training and match activities until further notice. Bayern, who sit top of the Bundesliga level on points with Borussia Dortmund, are due to face Freiburg on Sunday. Former club Manchester City, where Kompany served as captain and won the Premier League four times, was among those publicly wishing him a speedy recovery.
