Kuwait Sentences Three to Death for Iran-Hezbollah Assassination Plot

A Kuwaiti court on Monday sentenced three men to death for spying for Iran and Hezbollah and plotting to assassinate senior officials, including the First Deputy Prime Minister, while eight accomplices received five-year prison terms.

Kuwait's anti-terror state security criminal court sentenced three men to death and eight accomplices to five years in prison for colluding with Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah in a plot to assassinate senior Kuwaiti officials, including First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah. The three condemned men were convicted of espionage for a foreign power, joining an outlawed organisation, plotting aggressive acts against Kuwait, and undermining national interests. Some of the defendants were also charged with plotting to use explosives in the assassination, and one was additionally charged with attempting to smuggle explosives into the country from abroad. The court stated the convicts had sought to undermine the security of the country, sow unrest in society and shake trust of the public in the authority's ability to maintain law and order. The verdict is not final and will go to the court of appeals, which will issue a final ruling.
