Crystal Lake Premieres on Peacock to 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, Reinventing the Friday the 13th Franchise

Crystal Lake, a Friday the 13th prequel series starring Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, launched October 15 on Peacock with an 83% Rotten Tomatoes score — a historic high for the notoriously panned franchise.

Crystal Lake, a new Peacock original series premiering October 15, 2026, has earned an 83% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes — a remarkable figure given that all twelve Friday the 13th feature films have been rated 'Rotten' by critics throughout the franchise's history. The show serves as a prequel to the 1980 slasher classic, following Pamela Voorhees, played by Oscar-nominated actress Linda Cardellini, as she works in the cafeteria at Camp Crystal Lake while her young son Jason attends the camp. The series traces her gradual psychological unravelling after a series of traumatic events at the camp. Callum Vinson plays young Jason, with William Catlett as Sheriff Levon Brooks and Nick Cordileone reprising the franchise's ominous 'Crazy Ralph' character. Metacritic placed the show at 62, reflecting a wider critical split: horror specialists praised Cardellini's layered performance while mainstream critics divided on the show's approach. The Hollywood-adjacent review site Bloody Disgusting gave it a full recommendation, calling it 'a bloody, reverent return,' while UPI's Fred Topel argued the series 'overexplains' the mythology that made the original films effective. Crystal Lake launched as the dominant horror-streaming story of the week, drawing viewers curious to see a prestige treatment of one of cinema's most enduring — and critically dismissed — franchises.
