US Bans DeepSeek AI From All Federal Civilian Agency Systems

The US Department of Homeland Security ordered all federal civilian agencies to remove China's DeepSeek AI tools, citing data-security risks and potential transfers of sensitive government information to China.

The US Department of Homeland Security made public on 20 October 2026 a sweeping directive requiring all federal civilian agency IT systems to remove DeepSeek-related technology and barring future procurement of any products or services built on DeepSeek's models. The order covers DeepSeek's affiliated companies and all third-party software built on its models, broadening the impact across government software supply chains. Affected departments include the Treasury, State, and Justice departments; the Department of Defense is excluded. The underlying executive order was originally issued in late July 2026, making DHS's public release a formal confirmation of what had been quietly enforced for months. Authorities cited three main concerns: the risk that sensitive US government data could be transferred to China, user-tracking capabilities embedded in DeepSeek's technology, and security vulnerabilities identified in its models. The ban deepens an ongoing technology rift between Washington and Beijing and mirrors earlier actions against TikTok and Huawei. DeepSeek had gained global attention earlier in 2026 when its reasoning model matched or exceeded US rivals at a fraction of the training cost, rattling US tech stocks.
