Parallax Films has boarded international sales for Fuxi: Four Tales of Feasting, the new film from Chinese artist-filmmaker Qiu Jiongjiong, ahead of its world premiere in the main competition section of the Tokyo International Film Festival. Qiu is best known internationally for his debut narrative feature A New Old Play, which won the Special Jury Prize at the 2021 Locarno Film Festival.
Rooted in the folklore of China's Sichuan province, the film tells its story through four separate feasts spanning four millennia, bringing "the living and the dead, gods and ghosts, to the same table." The title word "fuxi" is a Sichuan expression for "the joy of the belly." Parallax describes the work as a "handcrafted mythic fantasy," noting that Qiu builds his cinematic world using hand-painted scenic flats, handmade props and theatrical staging rather than reproducing reality.
Taiwanese actor Lee Kang-sheng, the long-time lead in director Tsai Ming-liang's films, appears in two chapters playing two different grandmothers — his first female roles on screen. He is joined by actor-filmmaker Lee Hong-chi, whose directorial debut Love Is A Gun won the Lion of the Future award at Venice, and Annie Chen, known for her role in the Netflix series Born For The Spotlight.
The film is produced by David Tang, Ningyuan Ding and Zhao Jin as a co-production between Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan, with backing from the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum, the MPA APSA Academy Film Fund, the Red Sea Fund, the Doha Film Institute and NAFF at Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. The Parallax deal also covers Qiu's seven previous films.
