Fleetwood Town Stun Premier League Champions Arsenal in Historic Carabao Cup Upset

Fourth-tier Fleetwood Town eliminated reigning Premier League champions Arsenal from the Carabao Cup in a 5-3 penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw, in one of the greatest upsets in the competition's 66-year history.

In one of English football's most extraordinary cup shocks, League Two Fleetwood Town knocked out Premier League champions Arsenal from the Carabao Cup on Tuesday at Highbury Stadium. Fulham loanee Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave the fourth-tier side a 21st-minute lead before Viktor Gyökeres levelled for Arsenal in the 50th minute — just five minutes into the second half — following Mikel Arteta's half-time introduction of captain Martin Ødegaard. Arsenal teenage prodigy Max Dowman was then sent off with five minutes remaining, and Jay Lynch produced vital late saves from Ben White and Ødegaard to keep the scores level and force a shootout. In the penalty shootout, Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães' spot kick before teenage defender Conor Haughey smashed home the decisive penalty to spark a pitch invasion and send Fleetwood through 5-3. It is the first time the reigning Premier League champions have been knocked out of the League Cup by a fourth-tier side in the competition's 66-year history. The 84-league-position gap between the clubs and Fleetwood's +1500 pre-match odds made the result all the more remarkable. Fleetwood now advance to the quarterfinals of the competition for the first time. "I couldn't believe it," said manager Matt Lawlor. "The biggest night in the club's history in terms of opposition coming to town and we've managed to beat the champions somehow."
