Mamdani and Hochul Expand Free 2-K Childcare Programme to All Five Boroughs

Mayor Mamdani and Governor Hochul announced 10,000 new free childcare seats for 2-year-olds starting fall 2027, extending the full-day programme to the Bronx and Staten Island for the first time.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul announced the expansion of New York City's 2-K free childcare programme, adding 10,000 seats and bringing total capacity to more than 12,000 starting fall 2027. The Bronx and Staten Island will receive access for the first time; existing capacity in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens will be supplemented. The original programme launched in fall 2026 with 2,000 seats and attracted more than 5,700 applications, highlighting the unmet demand. Each seat saves families approximately $26,000 per year in childcare costs. The full-day, full-year programme runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., 260 days a year. The expansion is backed in part by the $1.2 billion Governor Hochul has committed to early childhood education statewide. The announcement was made during a joint campaign appearance in Brooklyn on Friday as early voting is set to begin on October 24.
