Apple's $2,000 Foldable iPhone Duo Breaks on Unboxing, Goes Viral Worldwide
Multiple buyers of Apple's newly launched $2,000 foldable iPhone Duo reported the screen cracking or getting permanently stuck at a 45-degree angle after just four or five open-close cycles, with their videos of broken devices going viral globally.
Apple's debut foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, launched at a retail price of $2,000, became the subject of widespread ridicule online after several owners posted videos showing their devices failing within minutes of unboxing. Jesse Dalton of Dallas reported his unit's hinge jamming at 45 degrees with a loud pop before coloured lines appeared on the display — after only four to five open-close cycles. Shane Basinski in Australia had his screen crack while simply showing the phone to a friend. Many similar accounts piled up on social media across multiple countries. Apple acknowledged the issue affected 'a small number of iPhone Duo units' and said it would offer replacements through AppleCare. Tech analyst Francisco Jeronimo of IDC pointed to 'possible sensitivity in the hinge tolerances,' while iFixit's Shahram Mokhtari identified weak hinge points that could damage the delicate display electronics beneath. The unboxing-fail videos spread widely because of the phone's premium price point, drawing comparisons to earlier foldable-phone failures by rival brands. WION News reported the story, picking up accounts from multiple continents.
