BVG to shut tram lines for months in 2027
Berlin's transport operator BVG announced long-term tram closures throughout 2027, with several lines affected by renewal works across different districts.
Berlin's public transport provider BVG has announced that it will close several tram sections for months at a time throughout 2027 to carry out track and overhead-line renewals, Berliner Zeitung reported on 10 October 2026. The plan affects multiple tram lines running through districts in the east of the city, where sections of track from the 1990s have reached the end of their service life. Passengers will have to switch to replacement bus services during the works, and total journey times on some lines are expected to lengthen significantly. BVG said the work is unavoidable to maintain safety and reliability on the network and promised early communication with commuters. Transport-policy observers warned that the closures could add pressure on an already strained bus fleet and on parallel underground lines. Fare-payers' associations called on BVG to compensate affected passengers or at least guarantee reliable replacement schedules. The exact timetable of closures will be published closer to the start of each phase.
