Verdi Signals Possible Strikes at Berlin's BVG in 2027 Wage Talks
Union Verdi has terminated key parts of the BVG collective agreement for more than 16,500 employees and will open new wage negotiations in early 2027, explicitly not ruling out strikes if talks fail.
Verdi has served notice on key portions of the collective agreement covering Berlin's public transit operator BVG, setting up a new round of wage negotiations to begin in early 2027. The move affects more than 16,500 BVG employees. Verdi union secretary Serat Canyurt emphasised that the union enters talks with the goal of reaching a good deal, not of striking. The 35-year-old made clear that warning strikes remain a last resort if talks stall — but he did not rule them out. During the previous bargaining round earlier this year, Verdi called two separate warning strikes at BVG. The two central issues in the coming talks will be wage levels and weekly working hours. Berlin commuters who experienced service disruptions during the last round of disputes will be watching closely, with negotiations due to open at the start of 2027.
