Trump Moves to Officially Ban the Term 'Artificial Intelligence' in US Government

President Trump announced on Tuesday that the US government will stop using the term 'Artificial Intelligence' in official documents, replacing it with 'Super Intelligence' or 'SI' — formalising an executive order he signed in late September.

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday that his administration will "officially BAN" the terms "AI" and "Artificial Intelligence" from all relevant federal documents, directing agencies to use "Super Intelligence" or "SI" instead. In the post, Trump singled out the Wall Street Journal by name for continuing to use the term, calling "Artificial Intelligence" "a very bad and inaccurate name." The announcement amplified an executive order Trump had signed on September 29, following a summit with AI leaders in Washington, D.C., which instructed the entire executive branch to use "Super Intelligence" and "SI" in place of "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI," and to stop acknowledging the older terms in official settings. The order stated that "Super Intelligence" more accurately captures the promise and advancing capabilities of the technology. Most major AI companies, including Anthropic and OpenAI, have continued using the original terminology. Elon Musk, however, has embraced the change, writing "No more AI / SI / It's better" on X and confirming that his AI division would be renamed — it is now called "SpaceX Super Intelligence" and "SpaceXSI," though its website remains x.ai. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has also used the "super intelligence" phrasing, but Microsoft has not announced any product name changes. Trump has similarly pushed to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," Lake Ontario to "Lake America," and the Atlantic Ocean, though Google's CEO declined to implement that last change in Google Maps.
