Netflix has set "The One About Matthew Perry," a three-part documentary about the late Friends actor, to premiere on October 27. Directed and executive produced by Mary Robertson — known for Quiet On Set: The Dark Side Of Kids TV — the film is produced through her Maxine Productions, a part of Sony Pictures Television. The documentary draws on intimate testimonies from close family and friends, including Perry's sister Mia Perry Bowick, to explore the man behind the icon — his generosity, humor, vulnerability, and the battles he fought throughout his life.
Perry was best known for playing Chandler Bing on NBC's Friends alongside Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Lisa Kudrow. He died on October 28, 2023, in Los Angeles at age 54. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office determined he died from the acute effects of ketamine; the autopsy also cited drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine as contributing factors, with the manner of death ruled an accident.
Perry Bowick said in a statement that she hopes the series gives everyone who loved him "a deeper appreciation for who he truly was, and the legacy he leaves behind." Executive producers include Robertson, Lisa Kalikow, Eli Holzman, and Aaron Saidman, with Lora Moftah serving as co-executive producer and Jessica Call as producer.
