Mamdani Directs $4.8 Million to Expand Gun Violence Prevention in Three Neighbourhoods
Mayor Mamdani announced Tuesday the city's Crisis Management System will grow into Bushwick, Harlem, and Washington Heights, adding 42 new positions including 30 credible messengers.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Tuesday the expansion of New York City's Crisis Management System (CMS) gun violence prevention programme into three new neighbourhoods: Bushwick in Brooklyn, Harlem, and Washington Heights/Inwood in Manhattan. The city will direct $4.8 million in previously allocated FY2027 budget funds, split equally at $1.6 million per neighbourhood, creating 42 new positions including 30 credible messengers, who are violence interrupters drawn from the community. Each area will also gain a programme manager, community coordinator, and employment specialist. In Bushwick the expansion builds on work by Southside United at Woodhull Hospital; in Harlem it extends Living Redemption's street outreach; Washington Heights/Inwood receives CMS coverage for the first time through Grow Up Grow Out Jr. The expansion extends CMS coverage from 29 to 31 NYPD precincts. Prior research credited CMS with 1,567 fewer shootings citywide between 2012 and 2024, a 21% reduction in areas served.
