NY Governor Race: Hochul and Blakeman Spar Over Subway Crime and Child Care
Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman used the Midtown subway shooting to attack Governor Kathy Hochul on public safety, while Hochul countered by touting the new 2-K child care expansion.
New York's governor's race intensified as Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman held a news conference at the site of the fatal 53rd Street E train shooting, accusing Governor Kathy Hochul of cutting police from subway platforms and allowing transit crime to rise. He proposed tax credits as an alternative to the 2-K child care programme. Hochul's campaign countered that she has invested a record $4 billion in policing, deployed 300 additional officers for overnight subway patrols, and overseen the second-safest subway year in 15 years. On child care, Hochul said she is 'just getting warmed up' and plans to take 2-K statewide. Mayor Mamdani dismissed Blakeman's tax credit proposal at their joint child care event. Transit crime is up nearly 2% this year but remains historically low. With election day approaching, both candidates used the subway shooting and the child care debate as defining contrasts, and coverage dominated NYC political pages on October 20.
