Mamdani and Hochul Expand Free 2-K Child Care Programme to All Five Boroughs
Mayor Mamdani and Governor Hochul announced 10,000 new seats will bring New York City's free programme for two-year-olds to 22 of the city's 32 school districts by fall 2027.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul announced an expansion of New York City's free early-childhood programme for two-year-olds, known as 2-K, to cover all five boroughs starting in fall 2027. The expansion adds roughly 10,000 new seats, bringing total enrolment to approximately 12,000 children, and extends the programme from five current districts to 22 of the city's 32 geographic school districts, covering all of the Bronx and Staten Island. Hochul committed $73 million to the programme this year and plans to invest $425 million next year. Chalkbeat New York detailed the specific neighbourhoods and districts. The announcement builds on Mamdani's signature campaign pledge on early childhood. Republican gubernatorial challenger Bruce Blakeman proposed tax credits as an alternative to publicly funded slots, but Mamdani and Hochul dismissed that approach at their joint press event, with coverage leading NYC homepages on October 20.
